The Makybe Diva Stakes is a Group 1 race run over 1600 metres at Flemington under weight-for-age conditions as part of the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival.
Horses aged three years and over can compete in the race with $1,000,000 in prize money on offer.
The 2018 Makybe Diva Stakes will be run on Saturday 10th September.
Makybe Diva Stakes History
The Makybe Diva Stakes was formerly known as the Craiglee Stakes and was renamed in 2007 in honour of the champion stayer Makybe Diva who is famous for winning three consecutive Melbourne Cups at Flemington.
Veteran jockeys Craig Williams and Damien Oliver have both ridden three winners in the Maybe Diva Stakes. Their big race experience is invaluable throughout the Spring Racing Carnival and any horse they ride must be respected.
Makybe Diva Stakes Honour Roll
The Makybe Diva Stakes has a long list of notable winners. They include WEEKEND HUSSLER, NORTHERLY and SHOCKING. ZABEEL who went on to become the sire of many champions won the race in 1990 as a four-year-old before retiring to stud.
NORTHERLY was Australia’s champion middle-distance runner early in the millennium and in 2002 he won the Makybe Diva Stakes, followed up by wins in the Turnbull Stakes, Caulfield Cup, and WS Cox Plate. He was deservedly named the Australian Horse of The Year.
